Colourful eggs are simply part of Easter - young and old alike enjoy painting and decorating Easter eggs every year, giving them to each other as presents and looking for colourful Easter nests in the garden.

How to dye eggs naturally

If you are looking for a real alternative to artificial colouring products from the shops, you can also use natural plant dyes. You can experiment with natural dyes and dye your eggs with elderberry juice, for example. This has resulted in beautiful purple tones and great shades in a wide range of colour intensities. Each egg is unique.
This year, too, there are no chemicals involved and this time we have coloured our Easter eggs with spices. The most beautiful colour is achieved with turmeric. In just a short time, you get a vibrant yellow colour that instantly conjures up a good mood on the Easter table. We have combined the yellow-coloured eggs with white and blue-speckled quail eggs.

Colouring with turmeric

For this, you need white eggs, 2–3 tablespoons of vinegar, turmeric (approx. 10g in 1/2 litre of water), an old pot, kitchen paper and disposable gloves.
To ensure that the eggs can absorb the colour well later, first soak the eggs in vinegar water for a few minutes. The red stamp on each egg can then be easily rubbed off the shell with some kitchen paper. The vinegar water also roughens the shell a little and gives it a more intense colour later in the dye bath.

How to prepare the dye mix

Allow enough water to boil for the dye brew (the eggs should be completely covered) and add the turmeric. We recommend at least 10g per ½ litre of water. Bring to the boil briefly and then leave to cool. Make sure you wear gloves. Turmeric not only colours eggs a sunny yellow, but also everything else that comes into contact with it.

Now carefully place the raw eggs in the cooled broth with a spoon and leave to cook until they are hard-boiled and the desired shade of yellow has been achieved. For a more intense colour result, simply leave the eggs in the dye bath for a few minutes to hours longer. To dry, place the eggs on a piece of kitchen paper or kitchen rack. After colouring, you can polish the eggs to a high shine with a little fat (oil or butter). To do this, put some fat on a soft cloth and rub the eggs with it.

Egg flowers made from crepe paper

We also made a “flower dress” out of crêpe paper for a few of the coloured eggs. This is a simple and quick Easter decoration idea that you can make with children and then give as a gift.
You will need yellow coloured eggs, white crêpe paper, double-sided adhesive tape, scissors, a ruler and a pencil. And it’s that simple: Cut three to four approx. 5cm x 15cm strips from the crêpe paper. Then lay the strips flush on top of each other and draw narrow flowers on the first layer of crêpe paper using a pencil. Now cut out the flowers with scissors. Small nail scissors work best for the curves.

Now stick the paper around the egg using the double-sided adhesive tape. Repeat this with all the layers and stick them slightly offset below the first flowers. Finally, carefully pull the flowers apart and place them in matching egg holders or bowls – and you have a very special Easter decoration.

Have fun colouring and looking for Easter eggs!
